New publication: Making and feeling time in the laboratory

Just published: my latest paper ‘Z-Time - Making and feeling time in the chronobiological laboratory’ has been published ahead of print with Time & Society. A departure from my usual historical work, this paper uses the tools of STS and temporality studies to think about the way different forms of time are made and experienced by chronobiologists as they study circadian rhythms in the lab. Based on a period of fieldwork following scientists through their often gruelling ‘time point’ experiments, I argue that we can think of Z-Time (zeitgeber time) as a tool that scientists use not only to investigate rhythmicity but also to customize their working lives.

With many thanks to the scientists who allowed me to follow them through their work and entertained all my many curious questions. Also thank you to the friends and colleagues who helped me learn to think and speak in a more anthropological way!

You can find the publication here.
